The Shropshire Horticultural Society, which runs the flower show, said sales of advance tickets, which had remained available until midnight on Thursday, had held up "very well".

Temperatures failed to reach the highs that were predicted yesterday but the Met Office was still expecting temperatures to peak at 19C (66.2F) by 4pm today.

Donna Hamer, new show chairman, said: "We have had perfect show weather for people to wander around and enjoy the main arena activities and everything is running smoothly so far.

"Advanced ticket sales have held up very well which we were expecting as everybody uses the internet these days and I would say we are very much on track to get the 50,000 visitors through the gates over both days."

She added: "It has been a wonderful show so far and I would say the highlight have been the floral displays we've had this year which are truly magnificent."

Other highlights have included a headline concert yesterday performed by folk band Bellowhead and cooking demonstrations by celebrity master baker Paul Hollywood.

Kim Leach, new secretary of the show, admitted she was excited to be involved and paid tribute to the dozens of volunteers who help stage the show each year.

"I'm very excited to be a part of my first show as secretary but I have to thank the volunteers for all the help they give us time and time again. They come back every year and we simply couldn't do it without them."
