Rain, rain go away – now frost is on its way

Dark clouds continue to loom over Shropshire today – and the region is likely to turn cold with frost to add to our troubles.

This dramatic picture, taken by Shropshire Star reader Jason Garton, shows Ludlow receiving a soaking.

Jason, from Telford, caught the moment a storm descended on the town.

It was one of many torrential showers passing over the region this week, causing localised flooding.

Flood barriers remain up in Shrewsbury and levels are being monitored, although there is no immediate threat.

A section of the Frankwell car park in Shrewsbury was closed as the high water swept through the county town on its way to add to the misery for those living downstream in Gloucestershire.

Nationally, coastal areas remain vulnerable, with extensive damage on the seafront at Aberystwyth. Many homes were evacuated and the resort's Victorian shelter was today on the brink of collapse.

Huge waves also prompted the Environment Agency to sound its flood siren in Dorset last night – warning of extreme danger to people and property

The alarm was raised after the sea breached Chiswell Beach in Portland around 10pm and spray crashed over flood defences, the Weymouth and Portland Coastguard said.

Residents, who had been on high alert for hours, were told by Dorset Police to move to an upstairs room facing away from the sea and it is believed some homes were evacuated.

More than 120 flood warnings urging people to be prepared for flooding remain in place across the country.

Showers will continue all week in Shropshire and Mid Wales, and there is a risk of frosts over the weekend as the weather looks increasingly likely to turn colder.
