Singer-songwriter Katie Melua will be bringing her mellow sounds to the Midlands twice this year.

She plays one of the summer concerts at Shrewsbury Quarry on July 11 and then returns later in the year to play Birmingham's NEC Arena on November 6.

But how well do you know Katie? We've unearthed 10 interesting facts about her.

1. Katie, (real name Ketevan Melua) was born in war-torn Georgia in the former Soviet Union, in 1984, moving to Northern Ireland when she was eight and then on to England aged 14. She became a British citizen in 2005.

2. She can trace her ancestry back to Canada and Russia and speaks three languages - English, Georgian and Russian.

3. Her first ever TV appearance was in 2000, when aged 15 she won £350 worth of MFI vouchers singing Badfinger's Without You on a spoof talent show called Stars Up Their Noses, part of the ITV children's programme Mad for It! If she had lost she would have been gunged.

The Wombles4. Katie's main musical collaborator, manager and producer is Mike Batt, the man behind the Wombles' eight hit singles and the writer of Art Garfunkel's number one hit Bright Eyes, from the film Watership Down.

5. She is a well known as an adrenaline junkie, enjoying, among other things, paragliding hang gliding, skydiving and white knuckle roller coasters. She has also taken flying lessons.

6. Katie dated Kooks singer Luke Pritchard for three years, but although they discussed marriage, their relationship broke down.

7. Katie has written a song for the forthcoming British comedy film Faintheart, a romantic comedy set in the world of battle re-enactments, about an irresponsible guy who has to shape up in order to win back his wife. She says: "It's the first time I've written a song specifically for a film."

In 2005 Katie came under fire in the Guardian newspaper from scientist Simon Singh over the scientific accuracy of her lyrics in the song Nine Million Bicycles, where she sings: "We are 12 billion light-years from the edge. That's a guess — no-one can ever say it's true, but I know that I will always be with you."

Later that year, she and Singh appeared on the BBC Today programme, with a re-recording which was changed to: "We are 13.7 billion light-years from the edge of the observable universe, That's a good estimate with well-defined error bars, Scientists say it's true, but acknowledge that it may be refined, And with the available information, I predict that I will always be with you."

9. In 2006 Katie set a world record by playing the deepest underwater concert - 303 metres below sea level on a North Sea oil platform. It was released as a DVD, Concert Under The Sea, last year.

10. According to the Sunday Times Rich List 2008, Katie has a fortune of £18 million, making her the seventh richest British musician under 30.
