By yesterday afternoon, some revellers at the two-day festival were knee-deep in pools of mud. Others were caked from head-to-toe.

Motorists leaving the festival last night were forced to help each other push dozens of stuck cars out of the mire.

Meanwhile a downpour on the second day of the Shrewsbury Flower Show virtually "wiped out" evening admissions to the event, organisers said today.

But all seats were full around the main arena as singing star Hayley Westenra took to the stage.

Shropshire Horticultural Society secretary Peter Road-Night said: "It came late afternoon and this virtually wiped out our 6pm admissions."

The mass military bands marching display was the only event cancelled.
