Rock group Radiohead have recorded a musical tribute to Shropshire World War One veteran Harry Patch following his death aged 111.

Mr Patch, who was known as the "Last Tommy" and used to live in Telford, served in the trenches as a private from June to September 1917 and fought in the bloody battle of Passchendaele in which more than 70,000 British troops died.

He died last month.

The Radiohead track Harry Patch (In Memory Of) was inspired by a radio interview with the former soldier recorded in 2005.

The song is available to download with all profits going to the Royal British Legion.

Writing on the band's website, singer Thom Yorke said: "Recently the last remaining UK veteran of World War One, Harry Patch, died at the age of 111.

"I had heard a very emotional interview with him a few years ago. The way he talked about war had a profound effect on me.

"It became the inspiration for a song that we happened to record a few weeks before his death.

"It would be very easy for our generation to forget the true horror of war, without the likes of Harry to remind us.

"I hope we do not forget. As Harry himself said 'Irrespective of the uniforms we wore, we were all victims'."

Hundreds of mourners are expected to pack into Wells Cathedral for Mr Patch's funeral service tomorrow. The veteran married his first wife, Ada, in Hadley, Telford in 1919.
