Letter: Ben E. King? He's the Don

Letter: I read with great interest (Star, January 25) that soul legend Ben E King is to appear at Shrewsbury's Theatre Severn in March.

It reminded me of the time I had the pleasure of meeting him 20 years ago, when he appeared on my then BBC Radio Shropshire Tuesday night programme.

He was a lovely chap, and he told me the great story of his journey that night to the studios in Shrewsbury.

He did not drive, so it was arranged a friend and radio colleague, Paul Cowdroy, would drive to Birmingham, to the hotel he was staying at, and chauffeur him to the radio station.

Paul went to the reception and stated "I'm here to fetch Mr King for the radio interview". The receptionist telephoned Mr King's room and passed on the message.

After a few moments two huge bodyguards came down the stairs accompanied by Mr King. Unfortunately it was the wrong Mr King. This guy was in fact Don King the boxing promoter. We chuckled over the great story, and went on to have a super show.
