Opera star Russell Watson will feature at this year's International Eisteddfod in Llangollen.

The award winning singer, who survived two life-threatening illnesses, is recognised as one of the world's greatest tenors.

He will feature in this year's festival on July 5 lining up with the National Symphony Orchestra and special guest Faryl Smith.

Watson said today: "I am absolutely thrilled to be following in the footsteps of so many international stars at what is known as the most famous Eisteddfod in the world. This festival really keeps a welcome in the hillside and I cannot wait to step foot on the pavilion stage and perform."

Eisteddfod chief executive Mervyn Cousins said: "It is great to have one of the world's most popular as well as most powerful voices at Llangollen 2011. We look forward to welcoming Russell Watson here, he of course joins a long line of fabulous singers who have graced the Llangollen stage."

He said he expected the concert to be one of the highlights of the week, following his recent sell-out concerts in the UK and elsewhere.

Mr Cousins said: "It will be good to welcome back Faryl Smith, who as many people know began her success in Llangollen as a vocal solo winner at the age of 11."

Starting with a gala concert on the Monday evening, the festival will continue throughout the week, concluding with a Sunday evening concert.

Accompanying musicians include the National Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of Welsh National Opera, Mid-Wales Opera Company.
