The former Led Zeppelin frontman is often spotted in the region, normally cheering on his beloved Wolves.

But the 65-year-old decided to treat his Midland fans with his first gig at Wolverhampton Civic Hall in eight years.

His appearance at the venue was one of just a handful of UK tour dates which will be performed by the star this year – and saw more than 3,000 people pack into the city centre hall.

Heading up his latest band, Robert Plant Presents Sensational Space Shifters, he gave a thrilling performance at the sell-out gig, playing an array of Led Zeppelin hits including Whole Lotta Love and Heartbreaker.

Despite reaching pension age Plant, who was born in West Bromwich, has maintained his legendary rock God stage presence and clearly still loves to perform. As well as performing some of his Led Zeppelin hits Plant also showed off some newer sounds from his latest band Sensational Shapeshifters.

The six-piece band boasts talented musicians including guitarist Justin Adams, and bass player Billy Fuller of trip hop legends Massive Attack.

Ed Sullivan, 35, who travelled from Newport for the gig, said the show was 'absolutely superb'.

"I've not seen him before on stage," said Mr Sullivan.

"It was absolutely superb. His performance of Whole Lotta Love was excellent.

"I've been to gigs at the Wolverhampton Civic hundreds of times, but I've never seen an audience captivated like that."

Gary Jones from Wolverhampton, went to see the show with his wife Sarah. Mr Jones, who has seen Plant perform live around five times, described the show as "probably the best" concert he'd seen of Plant's yet.

"It was really, really good," said the 51-year-old. "It was very Led Zeppelin – more so than I thought it would be .

"It was an excellent show.
