Booking problems put paid to Shrewbury charity shows

A long-running series of charity concerts featuring artists of the 1960s is to end due to problems in booking acts, it has been announced.

Relationship charity Relate has announced this month's 1960s concert at Theatre Severn featuring The Merseybeats and The Beat Beatles will be the last of its kind.

For the past decade, the charity has organised an average of two Sixties Night Out concerts each year in Shrewsbury.

The concerts have raised thousands of pounds to support the work of the charity and, in particular, its youth section Relateen.

Difficulty

But organisers said greater difficulty in booking acts has resulted in a decision to end the series. The final show will take place on September 28, starting from 7.30pm. Organiser Lin Foley said: "The fact is that for various reasons it is becoming more and more difficult to book the bands of the sixties.

"Some have long-standing commitments; others have disbanded or lost original personnel. But we are determined to bow out with a top-level show.

"We are signing off with the Merseybeats and the Beat Beatles because when they were with us 18 months ago they played to a sell-out audience," she said.

"News of the final appearance has travelled a long way because we have had a request for tickets from Perth in Australia as a gift for relatives in Shrewsbury."

Tickets for the final show cost between £17.50 and £19.50 from the box office or on (01743) 271161.
