The festival, which is held each August bank holiday on the West Mid Showground, has been shortlisted in the UK Festival Awards.

Fans of the event will be able to vote for it in the Best Family Festival and the Best Small Festival categories until midday on November 1.

It is the first time that the festival has been shortlisted.

Everyone who votes will be entered in a draw to win two tickets to every winning festival.

Folk festival director Alan Surtees said the nominations were "the icing on the cake of a spectacular year" for the four day event, which attracts about 7,000 visitors each year.

He said: "This year's festival was a vintage one. It was a fabulous few days of brilliant music and dance combined with the amazing atmosphere created by our festivalgoers.

"They come from far and wide to enjoy the festival and we are known for the special 'feeling' that Shrewsbury has to offer.

"We'd like everyone who has ever come to Shrewsbury and enjoyed themselves to vote and help us win one or both of the awards.

"It would mean a lot to be recognised by an industry event like this."

The festival is also entered into the Best Use of New Technology award for its innovative free webcast that is broadcast worldwide, thanks to Shrewsbury-based Microvideo and IT specialist Paul Ebrey.

A panel of experts will decide on the winner of that category.

The festival is also shortlisted in the Tourism event of the year category in the first Shropshire Star Tourism awards, which will be decided by an expert panel.

This year the festival was granted a licence extension, meaning it could broadcast live music in the dance marquee for an extra hour.
