Families are fast booking up seats for The Polar Express experience that is being expanded by a third this year with a new allocation of 21,000 tickets.

Delighted trust operators at the volunteer-run attraction, in Bridge Road, Horsehay, say they are amazed by the demand for the seasonal event that was launched last year in a bid to generate income to extend the railway line.

The railway's commercial director Mark Paynter said: "We are absolutely ecstatic. We can't believe how well the tickets have taken off. The sales take up has been really good even though it 's still early in the year. At this rate we might be sold out by Easter."

The Polar Express franchise will run from December 1 to 23, but there are just a few seats available for the weekend trips. Bookings are on www.midlandsthepolarexpressride.com/contact-us/

The steam railway will be open to visitors from April 15 to 17.
