The Newport Carnival Committee raised £475 over just five hours on Saturday, and were given £100 from the family of John "Stevo" Steventon, who was part of the team for many years.

The cheque was presented by Mr Steventon's family on his behalf.

Councillor Graham Foster, chairman of the carnival committee, said: "Overall this was a a very successful morning and the committee would like to offer a sincere thanks to everyone who contributed and to the kind gift from the Steventon family."

The committee will hold its annual Royal Party selection evening at the Royal British Legion at 5pm on May 20.

Those who are of primary school age and haven't already filled in their application will be able to still join in if they turn up on the night.

This year will see a number of changes coming to the Newport Carnival, including a change of venue.

Newport's Carnival Committee said that plans to move the event to the High Street would breathe new life into an experience that they say has become "stale" in recent years.

Instead of the celebration being held at the Shuker Fields, the 'best of British' carnival will start at the fields and move through the High Street from there.

Two stages will be at either side of the street, one with live music and the other for children with acts like fire eaters and jugglers.

Organisers plan to close the whole of the High Street from the evening of Friday, June 9 and then throughout the day on June 10.

Other closures will include Wellington Road, parts of Stafford Road, Lower Barr.
