An announcement on the star's official Twitter page this afternoon read: "With the heaviest of hearts, we must share the awful news that our father, Sir Roger Moore, passed away today. We are all devastated"

The star, best known for his role as suave spy 007, passed away following his battle with cancer, his family have confirmed.

Their statement goes on to praise their father for being 'so very special to so many people'.

He is best known for his roles in films such as The Saint, Octopussy, A View to a Kill, Moonraker and The Spy Who Loved Me.

In 1999, Sir Roger was made Commander of the order of the British Empire (CBE) and advanced to Knight Commander of the British Empire (KBE) in 2003.

The accolade was to mark Moore's charity work, which dominated his public life for more than a decade. Moore said that the citation "meant far more to me than if I had got it for acting... I was proud because I received it on behalf of UNICEF as a whole and for all it has achieved over the years".

On 21 November 2012, Moore was awarded an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from the University of Hertfordshire, for his outstanding contributions to the UK film and television industry.

He leaves behind wife Kristina Tholstrup, two sons and a daughter.

In 2016, Moore visited Wolverhampton's Grand Theatre to tell tales of his life to celebrate 71 years in show business.
