Midsummer madness grips Wellington fayre - in pictures
Visitors and residents alike partied like it was 1773 as a little midsummer madness gripped a Shropshire town.
Wellington held its annual Midsummer Fayre, with a procession of costumed characters weaving through the town centre – and even through its pubs on the way.
In the Market Hall traders also dressed up with the theme of ‘Wellington through the ages’ and there was music, from folk bands to choirs and bell ringing, both inside and outside All Saints Church.
About 45 stalls also filled the streets selling a range of craft goods and local produce, with activities and entertainment from circus skills to a hog roast, and more music and dancing in the square.
Rob Francis, event organiser and chairman of local heritage and arts group Wellington H2A, said it was inspired by the ancient June fayres that were held in Wellington as far back as the 13th century, along with the town’s annual jubilee celebrations of the 1770s.
He said: “We had a procession based on one that took place in 1773 with the Ironmen and Severn Gilders Morris dancers providing music.
“That went through the town and through the Market Hall and then made its way actually through The Pheasant pub for a pit stop, which I think took a few drinkers by surprise.”
He said he was glad to say this year’s event on Saturday had gone with a swing.
“It was our 10th anniversary so I was hoping it would be a good event and it was fantastic,” he said.
“The weather forecast was a bit concerning but there was not a drop of rain from 10am to 3pm.
“The stall holders were very busy and the performers got lost of fantastic feedback. The town was really buzzing.
“We had such good feedback that I’m sure we’re looking forward to doing it again on the second Saturday in June."
