Dog chosen for Legally Blonde in Wolverhampton
A winning dog has been selected to star in an upcoming musical in the Black Country.
Chester, a two-year-old bulldog, was brought along by his owner from Solihull and fought off competition from four other dogs to feature in Legally Blonde.
The production will show at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre in November and auditions were being held to find the most suitable dog to play Rufus in two scenes in the show.
Two rounds of auditions were held, with the dog having to walk across the stage, sit and run to the associate director David Barrett.
Mr Barrett, who also plays the 'UPS guy' in the production, was the main judge at the auditions.
He said: "Consistency was a big factor in choosing Chester. We saw five different dogs who were fabulous in terms of personality.
"The reason we do two rounds is to see if they can perform both times and have consistency and Chester absolutely brought that.
"We wanted to have a dog with personality and come on stage and look like it's enjoying itself.
"I'm thoroughly looking forward to the show now and having Chester on board."
Chester's owner, Selina Evans, from Solihull, said she was 'delighted' with the win.
The 42-year-old said: "I'm surprised, shocked but delighted and I know the family will be very delighted as well.
"It was all strong competition and they're all lovely dogs so I am shocked and very proud.
"I entered after a family member had spotted the advert and said Chester would be ideal because he has such a good temperament. He's really placid and fun, he's a right character.
"They are very intelligent as a breed – he's probably the most intelligent dog I've ever had.
"His dad was in Crufts too so he comes from a really good line."
Chester is the first bulldog Selina has had after previously looking after a cocker spaniel and choose a bulldog due to their calm temperament as she has children.
Three other bulldogs auditioned for the role, as well as a nine month old husky cross.
