Seats have been dedicated to sporting royalty Hugh Porter and Anita Lonsbrough in the Dress Circle.

The plaques recognise their sporting achievements; Anita as Olympic, European and Commonwealth Gold Medallist and Hugh as four times World Champion and Commonwealth Gold Medallist.

Both Anita and Hugh have been awarded the MBE and are regular theatregoers at the Grand.

Hugh Porter said: “We couldn’t believe it when we were told about the plaques. The Grand Theatre is a jewel in the crown of the City of Wolverhampton, it’s a massive honour to be part of the theatre’s vision.”

Anita Lonsbrough said: “It’s a great honour to be recognised in this way. The Grand Theatre is a place we often attend and enjoy visiting.

"Hugh was born here, but this is my adopted home and we are delighted to be involved in the campaign to protect the future of the Grand Theatre.”

Members of the public can sponsor their favourite seats in the Grade II listed auditorium or bricks in the new Encore Lounge for 5 years by donating £250.

This donation can also be spread over the sponsorship period into smaller donation payments.

Seat and brick sponsorship are just two of the ways that the Grand is raising funds to support its charitable work in the community.

John Harrison, Fundraising Manager at the Grand Theatre, said: “Hugh and Anita have achieved feats of greatness in their careers so it’s only fitting that these achievements are recognised.

“We want to encourage other people to celebrate achievements or special moments and occasions with these unique sponsorship opportunities.

"The Grand Theatre has been at the centre of Wolverhampton life since 1894, so by sponsoring a seat or naming a brick, you can become part of this rich theatrical history whilst helping to secure the Grand’s future and support its charitable work.”
