Gardens across Shropshire to raise money for charity

Many gardens across the country will be open to visitors over the weekend, to raise money for charity.

Gardens across Shropshire and the surrounding counties are opening as part of the National Garden Scheme (NGS), which raises funds for major UK charities including Hospice UK, MS Society and Marie Curie. Over the last 90 years, NGS have donated over £50 million to charities across the UK.

The garden at One Church Bank, Welshpool will be opening up to visitors on Saturday. Here, you are invited to explore the gardens of this 17th century barrel makers cottage. The large garden features a mystic pool of smoke and sounds as well as a zig-zag pathway leading to a shell groto, bonsai garden and many other unique features. The property also houses a museum of tools from different trades, which will also be open for visitors to have a look around.

Upper Shelderton House near Ludlow, will also be open to the public on Saturday. The property sits in over six acres of lush garden, which was originally landscaped back in 1962. The garden showcases a large sweeping well maintained lawn and a variety of seasonal and wild flowers from azaleas beds to rhododendrons. The garden also has a wonderful new kitchen garden as well as ponds and a woodland walk, perfect for spotting Shropshire wildlife.

On Sunday, The Citadel, at Western-under-redcastle near Wem will be welcoming guests, this mature four acre garden sits around a grand castellated house. The garden boasts many winding paths to explore as well as acres of camellias, herbaceous borders and fine trees. The garden also has a thatched Victorian summerhouse which looks out over the surrounding Shropshire countryside, a unique and interesting feature which provides shelter to all visitors.

Everyone is welcome, with refreshments being provided at most open gardens.
