Pubs in England reopen today, but there are rules you must remember

More than three months after they last welcomed customers, pubs in England can reopen from today as the country reaches step 2 on the road map out of lockdown.

And things will be a bit different since the last time you could go for a drink with friends over the winter.

Here's a rundown of the rules to remember when visiting a pub - or a cafe or restaurant.

Pub rules in England

The main thing to remember is that it is outdoor seating only for now, so dress for the weather!

You won't be able to go inside - except to use the toilet - until May 17 at the earliest.

That means no going up to the bar to order a drink either, as venues must operate table service when they reopen.

However, you can just order a drink now. You do not need to buy a substantial meal in order to have a pint or beer or a glass of wine, and you do not need to worry about a 10pm curfew either. Both of those rules from last year have been scrapped this time.

When it comes to meeting people, groups of six people from different households can meet, as can two households of unlimited size.

Pubs in Wales

Welsh pubs and restaurants will not reopen for another two weeks, and must continue to offer takeaway or delivery services only.

However from Monday, April 26 they are set to follow the same rules as English hospitality venues.

First Minister Mark Drakeford has also urged those living in Wales not to nip over the border for a cheeky pint either and wait until Welsh venues reopen towards the end of the month.
