The Ivor Novello Award-winning singer informed event organisers yesterday that she would be unable to play.

Shrewsbury Folk Festival spokeswoman Jo Cunningham said sympathies went to KT Tunstall's family.

She said: "In her place The Treacherous Orchestra will close Shrewsbury Folk Festival on our main stage, their full-on shows have to be seen to be believed and will leave people on a high."

Mrs Cunningham added that the second stage headline slot would feature a number of international artists, including several special guests making their first appearance at this year's four-day festival.

Around 6,000 fans were this afternoon enjoying the climax to the event at the Showground.

Mrs Cunningham added: "We keep saying it every year but it's true, the festival gets better every year. The past weekend has been breath-taking.

"We thought that the rain might have dampened people's spirits a little, but it didn't. People came out and had a great time. It's been our biggest, best and most successful festival to date."

The event gave Shrewsbury's economy an estimated £3 million boost as people from around the UK spent money in local shops, hotels, restaurants and guest houses.
