Officials at Wenlock Olympian Society have revealed details for their first major event of the year – the annual live arts festival which will be held in March and will include music, creative writing and dance.

Helen Cromarty, the society's PR and media secretary, said it was important the group continued to build on the success of last year, which saw visitors from across the world flock to Much Wenlock due to the town's link with Dr William Penny Brookes, the founder of the modern-day Olympics

She said: "We are inviting entries for the live arts competition in creative writing, music and dance for young people aged 18 and under.

"It is a fantastic competition and winners receive a Wenlock Olympian medal."

The festival has taken place each year since 1979.

Mrs Cromarty said: "It's definitely something we will be working to build on.

"We hope some of the shine generated by the Olympics will rub off on events taking place this year.

"We also hope some of the young people who took part so keenly last year will return this time round. It's important for us to build on everything that happened.

"The Wenlock Olympian Games were part of the history of the modern Olympics."

The 2013 Live Arts Festival will see music events for secondary school students held on March 13 and 15, with primary school children entering on March 16.

Creative writing will also be held on March 16, with dance sessions on March 16 to 17. For further information e-mail wenlocklivearts@gmail.com
