Traffic delays, mud . . . who cares? It's V Festival

Music stars were taking to the stage today as thousands of revellers finally made it to Weston Park for the V Festival.

There was traffic chaos as festival-goers descended on the park yesterday, with some reporting delays of more than five hours to get on to the campsite.

Traffic started building early and remained heavy, with tailbacks of up to 14 miles reported on the M54 yesterday afternoon.

At one point traffic on the motorway was stationary, with many getting out of their cars to stretch their legs while waiting for the tailback to clear. Many of the fans arrived to a sea of mud after early morning downpours, but better weather later in the day helped the site dry up.

More rain was due to fall later today – although music fans were unlikely to allow that to dampen the mood.

Lauren Edwards, 17, who was camping at Weston Park with her friend, Amber Billington, also 17, from Telford, said: "It will be worth it. The weather is all part of the atmosphere."

Ruby Munslow, 17, who had gone to the festival with a group of school friends, said: "You have to come early to get a good spot. I can't wait to see Beyonce, Calvin Harris and The Courteeners."

A total of 238 people were treated on site by Saturday morning by West Midlands Ambulance Service and St John's Ambulance.

One woman had a tent peg go through her foot and was given emergency medical treatment but has remained on site to enjoy the festival.

Around 38 patients were treated by on-site ambulance crews and four were taken to hospital.

One man suffered a burn to his foot.

John Hawker, West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman, said it had been a 'steady start'.

"If you're heading there today, it's really important that you don't forget your wellies as it's muddy underfoot on site," he said.

"With the weather forecast predicting more showers today appropriate footwear is essential to reduce the risk of injury through a preventable trip or fall.

"As always, festival goers are asked to pace themselves with their alcohol intake and keep themselves topped up with plenty of non-alcoholic drinks to keep hydrated. This will help to ensure they get to see their favourite bands and above all, have fun."

American rockers Kings of Leon are headlining the main stage today before American R'n'B superstar Beyonce performs tomorrow.

The weather also forced the cancellation of the Telford Parkrun this morning after yesterday's heavy rainfall damaged part of a footpath in Telford Town Park.

About 200 runners take part in the timed 5k runs each Saturdaymorning.
