TV review: Ten Years of Girls Aloud

It's hard to believe that it was a decade ago when five fresh-faced girls appeared on our TV screens and were pieced together to form pop band Girls Aloud.

It was certainly evident that Cheryl Cole, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts, Kimberley Walsh and Nadine Coyle have come a long way, as this ITV1 documentary looked back at the last 10 years of the group.

As fans eagerly await their reunion tour, the show explained what they have each been doing on their three-year break without any mention of messy relationship dramas or how Sarah's lips actually got that huge.

It's safe to say they definitely look a lot more glam now than in their auditions for ITV's Popstars: The Rivals back in 2002 – the same of which cannot be said for Louis Walsh on the judging panel, who looked exactly the same on X Factor this year.

The girls rocketed to fame after their first single Sound Of The Underground got to Christmas number one ahead of rival boyband One True Voice, and have since had five platinum albums and a Brit Award.

Cheryl, who admitted she didn't tell anyone she was going to audition for the reality show, described how her life changed immediately and how she felt she could no longer nip to the garage in her pyjamas for a pint of milk.

The innocence of how young they were when they shot to fame was truly reflected in Nicola admitting that their flat was always a mess, they would eat takeaways every night and didn't even know what bills were.

But all the long hours of travelling, appearances on radio and TV shows, and maybe even shouting out the windows of cars at traffic lights that people should buy their single, all eventually paid off.

As they recollected their memories, it left the impression that everyone truly got on in the group and there wasn't a lot of bickering.

Their favourite fashions also featured when some very skimpy outfits emerged from cut-out dresses to tassly tops.

After announcing their break in 2009, some of the girls have remained more in the limelight than others. Kimberley turned to musical theatre (not to mention Strictly Come Dancing), Sarah turned her hand to acting, and Nicola launched her make-up range, while Nadine moved to Los Angeles to run her own bar and restaurant.

But the member of the band who has constantly been in the spotlight for one reason or another has to be Cheryl, who kicked off her own solo career.

However, when the group got back together after pursuing their individual dreams, she admitted it was nice to share the responsibility again.

As we saw them catch up on gossip, claiming everyone was exactly the same as when they left, it won't be long before their reunion tour kicks off next year.

And I'm sure their fans will still be standing by their side.
