Seventies boy band heroes The Osmonds rolled back the years with a bravura performance at Shrewsbury's Theatre Severn.

The all-American family group left breathless fans shouting for more when they thrilled a sell-out crowd at the riverside venue last night.

The show started with a 20-minute trivia quiz on a video screen and The Osmonds' backing band, The Drop Outs, then took the stage for four numbers before a short interval.

The Osmonds, featuring Jimmy, Jay and Merrill for last night's performance, then took to the stage for a 100-minute set.

They told the audience they loved Shrewsbury and even threw in two extra numbers because they were having so much fun.

Theatre Severn duty manager Barry Tench said the show had been a hit.

He said: "I can say, without a doubt, the reaction from the audience was probably the most amazing that we've had at the theatre.

"From the first number, which was Crazy Horses, there were explosions and smoke and everything.

"The whole audience stood as one and cheered and danced.

"It was a fantastic reaction, everybody loved it.

"They shared family stories and jokes. They also used old footage of TV shows, home movies, flashbacks into the past.

"It was a great atmosphere. They threw in a couple of extra numbers.

"The hits came thick and fast with Down By The Lazy River and their last song Love Me For A Reason.

"They played a lot of new stuff as well, off the new album, which the fans loved."

The band visited the theatre as part of a series of 50 shows called Up Close and Personal: The Final Tour.

Last night was their 16th show and fans loved every moment.

Fan Maria Tudor met the band and said: "Oh my God. The Osmonds were awesome. I shook hands with them all and am never washing my hands again.

"I have loved them since I could walk. It was a childhood dream fulfilled."

After the show, Lynn Jones, from Shrewsbury, who has been a fan for 40 years, said: "I've seen them several times before.

"The sound was superb, it was like listening to CDs in my living room."

And Caroline House, from Shrewsbury, added: "They created a great atmosphere, it was an incredible show."
