Last Night of the Proms

Concert review by Chris Burn

Hundreds of patriotic people braved chilly weather as an evening of music and fireworks lit up Shrewsbury for the town's own version of Last Night of the Proms.

Despite low temperatures for the end of June meaning visitors had coats and blankets at the ready, the rain held off on Saturday evening at the West Mid Showground as Shrewsbury Light Orchestra put on an outdoor show.

And the orchestra soon had the crowd tapping their feet and clapping along as they performed music from down the centuries up until the modern day.

Along with playing a number of pieces with a connection to the Queen's Jubilee the orchestra also marked this year's 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic by performing music from James Cameron's hit film of the same name, including Celine Dion's My Heart Will Go On.

In the second half of the show, the focus turned to the music associated with the Last Night of the Proms, with standards such as Land of Hope and Glory, Rule Britannia and Jerusalem filling the night air.

Among those to enjoy the concert was Rosalie Davies, of Pontesbury. "I thought it was very good," she said. Also in the audience were Gloria and Syd Hopgood, from Bicton Heath, Shrewsbury.
