The world of classical music led by opera star Lesley Garrett paid tribute to Her Majesty the Queen during a Diamond Jubilee Concert at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod.

The concert last night also featured Classic Brit award winners, trumpeter Alison Balsom and violinist Nicola Benedetti.

It was a welcome return to Llangollen for soprano Miss Garrett, who thrilled the audience with a wide repertoire ranging from songs from Bizet's Carmen to Northern folk songs from her new album.

In the first half of the performance, she wore a red and blue Flamenco-style dress and later returned in a union jack dress and Welsh Dragon flags in her hair to the delight of the audience.

Miss Garrett said: "Tonight we have had classical girl power paying tribute to the most famous woman in Britain, Her Majesty."

Thousands packed the pavilion for shelter from the deluge that hit the town during the day. But they had to pick their way through floods on the field after the concert with stewards taping off several areas.

Many broke into an impromptu rendition of Singing in the Rain as they wove, caterpillar-like, under a roof of umbrellas back to the car parks or into the town.
