Jessie J's visit to Shrewsbury has cemented the Quarry's status as a major music venue, delighted organisers said today.

The pop star delivered a storming set in front of a sell-out crowd of 11,000 on Friday night in what was one of the biggest outdoor concert ever staged in the town.

Today concert promoter Keith Louch said the success of the show would attract other high profile performers to the town, securing Shrewsbury's position as a major concert venue.

He said: "I was really pleased with how everything went, especially considering how the weather had been.

"We were concerned but at the end of the day the show was dry – I must have been saying my prayers.

"I think the concert has boosted The Quarry's credibility as a venue.

"It was the biggest show we have ever done and it shows it can work and that there is an audience – and an enthusiastic one at that.

"I hope the gig will make The Quarry a regular part of the concert season and attract other big names to the town."

Mr Louch said he would definitely look to hold other concerts in The Quarry but that it would be limited.

"We would be looking to do one big gig a year, as it is a residential area and we don't want to upset people living nearby," he added.

Meanwhile, business leaders said today the concert had given the town's economy a welcome boost.

Peter Bettis, the chairman of Shrewsbury Business Chamber, said: "It put the town on the map and it was a great opportunity for retailers – not only those selling food and drink but also umbrellas and wet weather gear.

"Rveryone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it was a great day for traders."

Outdoor shop Millets remained open for an extra hour on Friday evening to cope with demand for wet weather gear by concert goers.
