We caught up with Leo Moran, lead guitarist and singer, to find out about his perfect weekend.

It's Friday afternoon, what's on your mind?

Well, it all depends whether I'm on tour or not. My Fridays are very different to the sort that a lot of people have because I don't have any routine. I could be on the road anywhere in the world.

If I was at home, the most likely scenario is that I would call a few of my friends, who would have just finished their week's work.

I live in a small town and we're within a ten minute walk of about 20 pubs, so we'd get together at one of our favourite locals.

Who normally has the pleasure of your company at the weekend?

My girlfriend, Eleanor, normally has the pleasure of my company. She works every second weekend, so anybody who happens to be in a public house at the time would have that dubious pleasure.

How do you prepare for a big night out?

I'll put on some nice clothes and have a shower. I won't do anything in particular. For me, a big night out is a good dinner at a restaurant.

We have a very good Indian restaurant locally, which I like to visit.

What's your favourite party outfit?

I don't have a favourite one, as such. I'll just throw on a nice jacket and a pair of jeans.

You've just arrived at the bar. What's your first drink?

I seem to drink Guinness wherever I am. It's always at its best when you buy it in Ireland. These days, the standards have become more homogenised.

Nobody really knows why it's better in Ireland, Guinness don't tell anyone the secret.

What's your favourite nightspot and why?

I'm a pub man, I like a nice pub where you can sit down and talk.

We live about 100 yards from a place called the Rustin' Vaults and there are some lovely characters in there. I've been going since I was a child. It's a real old man's pub; the sort of place where you meet the same people and you can sit and talk.

We used to go there and watch the colour TV when we were kids, to see the European Cup and FA Cup.

What tune always gets you on the dance floor?

Forget it. (laughs) I'm not a dancer, it's very hard to get up there.

It's a sunny Saturday, what are you up to?

Well, if I was at home I'd go back to the lake, near where I live. I have a boat on the lake, and I go and do a bit of fishing.

I'm happy to go out alone, but usually there'll be one or two people interested. The best thing is to get the gang together and have a picnic, there's nothing better.

Going out on the boat is great, it's a great way to switch off from being on the road.

What was your most memorable weekend, and why?

I think it was a weekend that happened when we were in the band. We had an amazing weekend in 1991. It was our first homecoming gig and we put up a tent in the local Gallic football stadium.

We had 9,000 people at the gig and maybe many more came than that.

It was the best weather of the whole year, at the start of September.

We had The Waterboys and The Hothouse Flowers playing with us and it was a wonderful day, it was one of those days that everybody remembers. Everything went well.

What's the recipe for a perfect night in?

I just get a nice bottle of wine and a good film.

Favourite DVD? And what would you eat while watching it?

I've been watching The Shining a lot lately, I found it very scary when I was a teenager.

Now I see the black humour in it and think it's funny. I'd eat pate and cheese and crackers.

Sunday breakfast – cooked or continental?

I'll usually be out on a Saturday, so I'll need something. These days, I go more towards continental for health reasons.

There's a place across the road called the Railway Kitchen, where they do a proper Irish breakfast.

You tell them what you don't want, rather than what you do, and they fill your plate. If you tell them you can't eat three sausages, they give you extra rashers of bacon.

Sunday lunch – home cooked or down the pub?

It'll be home cooked and we'll have a nice big roast. I like sitting down with Eleanor and having a chat about the week.

When and how you like to relax?

I'm relaxed all the time. We have a job that involves no real work. I don't have a work-relaxation thing.

It was always the dream to play in a band and do music, it was always my idea to do that and travel the world. Something happened and it worked out. My life is completely relaxed.

You've got a whole weekend off and a wad of money in your back pocket. Which country or city would you head to?

I love New York and I think I'd spend a day in New York. A day in New York is like two days in any other city because everything is so close and easy. Everything is open all night.

You can't beat New York, it's an amazing city.
