Review: The Drifters, The Buttermarket

They may have been through more line-up changes than Shrewsbury Town's back four, but the Drifters proved that the music is bigger than the individual when they performed in Shropshire as part of their 60th anniversary Diamond Dynasty Tour.

The 'world's first boyband' had the audience at The Buttermarket in Shrewsbury in the palm of their hands from the start.

Once the audience, a heartening mix of the young and not-so-young, had been persuaded to make their way onto the dancefloor, the gig turned into a giant party.

Opening with Come On Over To My Place (I was probably the only one singing 'hey you, we're having a Wimpy'), they tore through some of the best known songs around, including On Broadway, You're More Than A Number In My Little Red Book, Under The Boardwalk, Stand By Me, Up On The Roof and Saturday Night At The Movies.

One number followed another, the only break came when a couple joined them on stage for a proposal of marriage – she said yes.

All too soon it was time for the encores and the set wrapped up, inevitably, with Save The Last Dance For Me. The Drifters will be back in the near future.

It might be worth saving the date in your little red book.
