Students at the Rock Project put their own bands together after musical lessons, then teamed up to take part in the annual Christmas Fayre at HMP Shrewsbury.

Lisa Wordley, who runs the Rock Project Shrewsbury, said: “Our students have been really excited about taking their music out to the community and performing in a number of activities on the run up to Christmas.

“A gig in a prison meant they obviously had to rehearse Elvis’s classic Jailhouse Rock which went down well with the crowd.

“We also held mini taster sessions in an effort to inspire and encourage more young people to join The Rock Project in the new term.”

The Rock Project team take guitars, bass, drums and microphones to each of the events and allow youngsters to play on them with a supervised tutor.

The Shrewsbury group meets at The Barnabas Centre, Longden Coleham Road, Shrewsbury every Monday and Tuesday.

It is divided into juniors for seven to 11-year-olds from 4.15pm to 6.15pm, and seniors for 12 to 18-year-olds from 6.30pm to 8.30pm.

All of the instruments are supplied.

Lisa also runs an adult version for over 18s every term which runs for 10 weeks and concludes with a live gig.
