Shrewsbury Town ground transformed for Lionel Richie as tickets still available

And the good news is there appears little chance of the torrential rain that gave people watching Rod Stewart a soaking last year.

Final preparations are being made to the Shrewsbury Town pitch to accommodate up to 10,000 fans.

Doors open at 4pm and support act Anastasia will be on stage just before 7pm. Once her set is finished, Lionel will entertain the crowds from 8.25pm.

The 100 million-selling performer is currently on his UK Summer Tour and will be belting out some of his most famous hits.

Tickets range between £49 and £136 and many seats are still available with just one day left until the big performance.

Pitch prepared

Seats have been placed on the pitch and the club’s newly-installed safe standing area will be used by fans for the first time.

Miles of cabling have been installed both in the backstage and stage area to provide power for the lights and sound and lorry-loads of scaffolding have been brought in to get the stadium ready for a night to remember.

The 68-year-old will sing his most famous hits including Three Times A Lady and Endless Love as well as some of his best known songs from The Commodores fame.

Ever since his set in the Sunday Afternoon Legends Slot at Glastonbury in 2015, he has been been busy.

He hasn’t released any new music since 2009 but that doesn’t mean the songs have stopped.

Instead he has been touring the world with his backing band and now, as part of his 12-date UK show, he is stopping off in Shrewsbury.

Will it rain?

His appearance at the Montgomery Waters Meadow follows on from the successful shows of Elton John and Rod Stewart.

Organisers are hoping that the weather will stay fine for the gig.

Rainfall at last year’s Rod Stewart concert caused some technical problems but it is hoped that, although showers are predicted the heavy rainfall of earlier in the month will stay away.

Huge downpours at Rod’s show saw members of the stage crew have to sweep water off the stage shortly after the gig started.

According to the Met Office there will be cloudy skies tomorrow although the temperature will be a pleasant 20C (68F). And currently there is only a 10 per cent chance of rain.

Transport to the Town ground

Meanwhile, parking plans have been announced.

Blue Badge holders will be able to park at the stadium and Shrewsbury Town Football Club has made parking available at Oxon Park & Ride at Bicton Heath and from Halls Auction Market at Battlefield.

There will also be two park and stride options within walking distance of the football ground at Meole Brace Park & Ride and Springfield Recreation Ground/Mereside Recreation Centre. The car parks will be open from 4pm.

For those wanting to catch a shuttle bus, coaches will be running from the bus station which are also starting from 4pm.

Brian Caldwell, chief executive of Shrewsbury Town said that the club was looking forward to the show and that in the region of 10,000 fans were expected.

“We have a couple of parking options available within walking distance of the stadium but have worked hard not to impact on the local residents.

“Along with the stride and ride we are able to offer Park & Ride and the shuttle buses. We are looking forward to a great evening.”
