Shrewsbury's square in the town centre is to be filled with games

Giant games will be brought in for families to enjoy during the last few days of the summer holidays.

The move is the latest brought in by Shrewsbury BID to encourage more people to visit the town and comes as roadworks continue to cause disruption.

The three-day event will see games including giant chess, tumble tower, Connect4, and quoits set up in the historic square.

A large draughts board will also be placed in The Museum and Art Gallery Courtyard next to the Stop Cafe.

Mike Dalton from the cafe, which is inside the museum building, said he was delighted to be housing one of the games.

He said: “We think the board will add another bit of theatre for our customers to enjoy as they stop for tea, coffee and cake or for their lunch with us.

"It all adds to the experience we offer here – a warm and welcoming atmosphere.”

Carol Grant, who runs a designer fashion store in The Square, said: “It is a great idea and offers a great family-friendly finale to a wonderful summer.

“The idea of surprising town visitors with a pop-up garden of games sounds ideal, not only for parents looking to entertain the children at the end of the long summer holidays, but also for grown-ups to relax in and have a bit of fun.”

The giant games are part of the Original Shrewsbury series of events which are being staged within the town and are free for everyone to enjoy from 11am on Monday until 4pm on Wednesday.

The attraction comes at the time when residents living in the town centre have approached Shrewsbury’s MP voicing their concerns over the roadworks on Pride Hill.

Daniel Kawczynski has said that he has received numerous emails, letters and messages on social media from people concerned the works to revamp the shopping street would not be completed on time.
