Raise a glass today for Darwin's birthday
Salopians have been urged to join the Charles Darwin festival founder in raising a glass virtually to celebrate the birthday of Shrewsbury's most famous son.
Jon King, founder of the DarwIn Shrewsbury Festival, has spent a significant amount of time researching the history of Darwin and his time in Shrewsbury. Jon was among those that began the Darwin Festival with the signature toast on Darwin's birthday every year on February 12.
Today the toast will be held on Zoom.
Also as part of the festival today will be a talk from physicist Dr Kathryn Broadhouse, who studies the brain using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Her work focuses on translating cutting-edge imaging techniques to map and model mental health disorders and healthy ageing, with the aim to better understand the healthy brain, how our brains differ in disease and how we can all stay mentally healthy.
In this talk she will look at how we use neuro-imaging to study the human brain and its function. She will first look at how the brain’s structure is tied to our evolutionary past and how this, in some ways, determines how we think and process information. She will then look at how machine learning, neural networks and artificial intelligence have evolved from models of the brain and how we are using them to study the brain further.
The lecture will be followed by a Q&A session.
