Elf: A Christmas Spectacular, Resorts World Arena, Birmingham - review
Christmas came early to Birmingham as hoards of elves and festive-clad kids - big and little - descended on Resorts World Arena for a Crimbo-tastic spectacular.
Starring David Essex and Martine McCutcheon, the all-singing, all-dancing musical stage adaptation of Elf encompassed everything from astounding acrobatics, to huge inflatable candy canes, skating, indoor snow, and a sleigh which seemingly flew around the arena.
The show had something for everyone, with pantomime-style crowd participation, jokes for the parents, wonderful costumes, and dazzling graphics and props excellently displaying the various set locations - all the way from the North Pole to New York.
The crowd was even entertained before the performance began, with juggling and unicycle tricks from a clumsy elf, and an amusing display from an acrobat dressed as a clown.
Taken from the film starring Will Ferrell, the story of Elf tells the tale of Buddy, a human who as a baby crawled into Santa’s sack and was consequently taken back to the North Pole and raised by elves. After discovering his true heritage, Buddy - portrayed by actor Tam Ryan - travels from Santa’s workshop to New York City in hopes of tracking down his father Walter Hobbs, played by singer/songwriter and acting icon David Essex.
While there, Buddy is at first faced with disbelief and rejection, leading him to meet Jovie, a woman who plays the part of an elf in a department store - portrayed by Love Actually and Eastenders star Martine McCutcheon.
He later wins the love of his father and family, while bringing back the magic of Christmas to New York with the help of Father Christmas and a fellow elf.
David and Martine both played their parts brilliantly; David impressing with his trademark vocals, and Martine with her commitment to the role and lovely singing.
Tam, meanwhile, took on the silly, excitable role of Buddy brilliantly, perfectly capturing the hyperactive, childlike character made famous by legendary comedian Will Ferrell.
Most astonishing, however, was the stupendous array of entertainment throughout the show.
At each and every moment there was something to look at, ensuring the display remained constantly entertaining for the little ones in particular.
Circus performers astounded with awesome aerial acrobatics, breathtaking tightrope walking, trampolining and more, while scores of youngsters from Solihull’s Pauline Quirke Academy filled the stage as dancers in multiple roles.
A wonderful, dynamic adaptation of the festive favourite film.
Runs at Resorts World Arena until December 24.
