The sea may be a long way away but that doesn't mean Shropshire is safe from pirates of the pint-sized variety.

Tiny tots are recreating swashbuckling adventures on the high seas at the Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre in Craven Arms, in a special themed half-term week.

Called "Pirates of the Onny Meadows", with the wild meadows next to the centre taking the place of the seas of the Caribbean, activities are taking place from 1pm to 2.30pm every day until Friday.

Jade Marriott-Lodge, marketing and development manager at the charity-run visitor centre, said children had been having a lot of fun "on the seven seas".

She said: "They have been answering riddles to find treasure, singing pirate songs and going on the high seas with parachute games.

"Children have been free to come in pirate dress if they want to and we have been making pirate hats and spy glasses."

The activities are open to children aged three to 11 and on Tuesday youngsters of the same age also had the opportunity to design their own pizza treasure map and cook "dead man’s fingers" while drinking lemonade "to keep away the scurvy".

On Saturday the visitor centre will be putting on a one-day cookery course for older cooks.

Sabrina Zeif, founder of Kitchen Thyme UK, will lead a class on a culinary tour of the world of herbs and spices. from 10am to 2pm

Jade said: "Aimed at all levels, Sabrina Zeif makes the courses fun for everyone, providing you with lots of skills to take away and try at home – inspiring you to be more creative and adventurous in your cooking by gaining confidence and smarts to flavour your meals like a pro.

"Sabrina will be teaching fresh and flavourful dishes that incorporate herbs and spices from around the world whilst drawing from her own native Caribbean roots, where using herbs and spices in cooking is second-nature."

The Cooking With Herbs and Spices course is £35, booking ahead is advised.
