Letter: Dining idea is a joke. Isn't it?

Shrewsbury SquareLetter: Reading your article on the "Australian style al-fresco dining centre" for Shrewsbury made me chuckle – then I suddenly realised it wasn't an April Fool.

Firstly, Shrewsbury cannot be compared to Melbourne by any stretch of the imagination.

Secondly, other towns and cities in England that are successful in this respect have excellent pedestrianised areas, whereas Shrewsbury has none.

Thirdly, Shrewsbury is always choked with traffic.

Do the advocates of this scheme really think more people, especially families, would rush to dine outside in this environment (which is not even conducive to a pleasant shopping experience), or are they attempting to increase trade by attracting smokers?

I agree with this concept in principle, but it's not compatible with Shrewsbury.
