Letter: Why our pubs are closing

Letter: With reference to the letter on July 7 from Peter Hassall, of Shifnal.

He stated that it was no wonder pubs were closing because of the rip-off prices they charge. Well, he clearly has never run a pub.

Managing a pub, I can tell you we don't have the luxury of buying any alcoholic products as cheap as supermarket chains do. So whatever we buy in we have to mark up from our wholesale prices to make some sort of a profit as after all we are a business.

As we are only one business and not a chain we cover all our overheads from one location not multiple ones around the country.

The reason pubs are closing and people are losing their livelihoods is because we can't compete with these large supermarket giants, which are monopolising our industry.
