Consideration should be given as to whether Wellington should lose its most prestigious town centre hotel.

The hotel was for many years regarded as most suitable for special annual events until acquired by Nextdom, who downgraded it.

However well it may be proposed to be converted into flats and houses, that is not the best way to use this building.

Just what is the story of this site may never be known, especially if this development is permitted.

There are reasons to suppose that it may have been the site of the medieval manor house.

Archaeological investigations in the several cellars would probably throw light on its many previous uses.

Of course, if the cellars are filled in this evidence will be hidden if not destroyed.

Surely the traditions and opinions of Wellington people should have a prominent part in the debate about the future of this site.

What is needed is a rejuvenated Charlton Arms Hotel.
