It is far from easy, but as a councillor I am able to look behind the soundbites and the spin, and find out exactly how ordinary people are going to be worse off following the Tory and Lib Dems spending review.

Furthermore, the result of these cuts will often be harmful to local small businesses putting local firms and jobs at risk. For example, the social housing budget has been slashed, meaning local young families will have almost no chance of staying in the towns and villages they grew up in.

Local building firms and suppliers who were to build those houses will have a struggle to replace that work in the current tough housebuilding market. Worst of all, those already on housing waiting lists will just see those lists getting longer and longer.

In the coming weeks on behalf of local people I shall be digging out the real consequences of these cuts, and taking to task those local politicians who are responsible. I have been frankly stunned about how easily certain people, who made manifesto commitments as local Liberal Democrat candidates, are now quite happy to support completely the opposite position.

Remember, the only way the Tories are able to implement these cuts is with the support of the Lib Dems.
