In their wisdom the Labour group decided that decisions were to be taken by council officers.
With these delegated powers, the council highways officers decided to spend £3.5 million of the money on projects that were not needed - such as ripping up a perfectly good road surface on some road islands just to replace it; create an additional turn left lane on junctions where again it was not required; replace safety barriers and other such schemes.
Residential roads such as Deercote received some attention but some parts did not receive attention despite repeated requests and they decided not to apply a surface dressing which in their own words would have given road a seven - to eight-year lease of life from major work.
Had the remaining £10.5 million been used to apply surface dressing to residential roads around the borough the weather we have been experiencing would not have caused major damage.
Given the current economic climate of the country and the council having to cut budgets the electorate can be sure that the highways budget will be severely cut leaving residential roads to become little better than cart tracks.
