Letter: Better uses for cash than Telford amphitheatre
Letter: In reply to Theron Haynes letter (Shropshire Star, December 22) regarding the town park amphitheatre, it should be pointed out that the last Labour administration at Telford & Wrekin let this amenity fall into disrepair over many years, preferring to use the Arena.

The Friends of Telford Town Park have looked at getting the amphitheatre back in use; however there is not only the cost, estimated at a six figure sum, but whether it would be used.
Several free events have been put on by Telford & Wrekin Council over the last few years in the Arena and whilst these have been popular, many more people could easily have attended. Culture Fest is just one example, that whilst a successful event and growing each year, it could accommodate far more visitors in terms of numbers.
The amphitheatre was looked at in relation to the park's recent successful Big Lottery bid but it was felt that much better use could be made of the limited money, including preserving a lot of the park's industrial heritage.
The Friends of Telford Town Park have asked to have the overgrown willow trees cut back at the base of the amphitheatre in order that a decent view can be seen of Randlay Pool beyond and it is hoped that this will be carried out during 2011.
If Theron Haynes would like to help improve the amenities in Telford Town Park he would be most welcome to join us at the Friends, there are always lots of tasks to do.
