Letter: The recent tragic car crash at Emstrey traffic island, Shrewsbury, has prompted me to write regarding the crazy new road markings there.

Although they may not have been the cause of this accident, these markings will almost certainly cause future accidents.

Until recently motorists travelling along the A5064 from Shrewsbury towards Emstrey and wishing to turn left on the A5 were directed by the markings to stay in the inside lane, those wishing to carry straight on towards Atcham or wanting to turn right stayed in the outside lane.

Then some bright spark came up with the idea to do away with the left turn arrow and replace it with two arrows pointing straight ahead to Atcham. This results in two lines of vehicles with the drivers in either lane not knowing the intentions of the other as signals are not needed if both head to Atcham.

Thus when the lights turn to green possibly both lines of traffic wishing to take the Atcham exit accelerate the few metres to a single lane, whereas anyone with an iota of intelligence knows that two into one does not go.
