Letter: England's not so green and pleasant land
England's green and pleasant land – well, not at this time of year actually.
England's green and pleasant land – well, not at this time of year actually.
Each winter our roads seem to get covered in more and more mud, because, first, there is an increasing number of large heavy duty tractors with 10 ton trailers moving chicken manure, and, second the large number of motorists who have no time to give way on narrow roads.
And 4x4 drivers seem to believe it quite acceptable to drive up the verge rather than be courteous.
There also seems to be an increase in the number of HGVs, and considering these are supposed to be controlled by professional drivers, it is then amazing that they have no hesitation about driving at speed, and rubbing their expensive tyres against anything that may be there, but more especially verges which shower oncoming vehicles in mud.
There is a very good case for concreting over all verges, which would save them being churned, with all the resulting mud.
I know all mud is not totally avoidable, but I do object to my driveway being covered on a regular basis, because I have to hose down the underneath of the car.
Mind you, I doubt that concrete verges would make roads wide enough for some people.
