Letter: Is Telford a black hole for culture?

I would like to express my anger at the decision not to screen The Artist in Telford.

This is not the first time we have been singled out as a town unable to watch intellectually or artistically challenging films. It has happened over movies of Shakespeare productions, among others. I, for one, am fed up with living in a cultural black hole.

We have a major rebuilding taking place at Telford Town Centre and yet no mention has been made of a theatre of any kind that is able to present professional (as well as non-professional) productions such as those staged at The Grand in Wolverhampton.

  • We bring The Artist to Telford

Now decisions have been made that we would not welcome this Oscar-winning movie. I am quite sure that the decision has a great deal more to do with profit than distribution. Clearly the management at our cinema believe that not enough people will attend to make the showing 'profitable'.

If, like me – you feel incensed as I do – please don't telephone the cinema staff, since they did not make the decision. Instead, send or deliver a letter of protest to the cinema, or e-mail the Odeon group by using the 'contact us' facility at www.odeon.co.uk

And let the Shropshire Star know your opinion.
