Charlotte Church at Ludlow Assembly Rooms - Review

She may have had something of a chequered past – but Welsh singer Charlotte Church has well and truly got her mojo back.

Since being thrust into the public eye as a 12-year-old singer with the 'Voice of An Angel', Church has never been far from the headlines.

But after a few years out of the limelight she has come back with a new image as a rock chick – and a sell-out crowd of 300 people at Ludlow Assembly Rooms were the lucky ones to benefit.

Despite initially appearing a little nervous, Church was soon lapping up the attention of the crowd.

She was able to use her full vocal range with songs like Say It's True and Come To Me, and on occasion also belted out the high notes from her classical past.

Her quirky cover of 80s hit Black Velvet also went down a treat, while she also managed to slow the tempo down with haunting songs such as How Not To Be Surprised When You Are A Ghost.

The only disappointment for the capacity crowd was when she failed to reappear for an encore despite the audience's calls and cheers. It later transpired she was out of new material.

Church says she is now avoiding the limelight and music's mainstream – but certainly seems to have found a niche and reignited her passion for music.

She was very down to earth when interacting with the audience – and was clearly delighted at the positive response she received.

Her four-track EP isn't out till next month but it is one to look out for. Her 28-date tour will finish at the end of October.

Support acts on the night included Miss Church's boyfriend Jonathan Powell and Sion Russell Jones.
