Letter: Churches on target on welfare changes

It is fitting that at Easter four churches spoke out about the Government's welfare changes. As they point out these changes are hitting the most vulnerable.

What is more telling is the high proportion of those in receipt of benefits are in fact in employment. Yet the Government's argument is that those on assistance should not be drawing more than those at work.

Rather than focus on the relative advantage in some cases of being unemployed the question is, why aren't a lot more employees receiving a living wage?

In respect of the economy there is no correlation between paying low wages and achieving general economic prosperity.

The irony of these policies is that those who are to suffer these cuts are in no way responsible for the current financial crisis, yet alongside these welfare announcements Lloyds TSB reported that 25 senior staff were to be paid more than a £1million. There is such a thing as "fairness" and this is the element that is being lost.
