, which ran from Saturday night until Sunday morning.

But the university in Edgmond, near Newport, has received dozens of complaints from neighbours, who said they could hear the music from up to two-and-a-half miles away.

Harper Adams has apologised to residents and said the noise carried further than usual due to strong winds.

Karen Reynolds, of Woodridge Close, Edgmond, said: "It kept me awake. They said it was going to be better this year but if anything it was worse. It was just bump, bump, bump, bump until 7am."

Michelle Errington, meanwhile, posted on Facebook: "Now I'm all for a good party but that was just a little silly."

And George Humphreys, of Newport Road, Edgmond, said: "We moved from Newport because of the noise from the students. I think it should've finished at midnight – that's surely late enough for anyone."

But Brian Watson Jones, of Newport Road, said: "We've never had any trouble with the students. They bring people into the town and I admire what they do for the area."

Dr David Llewellyn, vice-chancellor at the university, said: "We appreciate that the summer ball this year did cause some noise disruption to the local community and we want to offer our apologies to those who were affected.

"Our students liaise closely with relevant authorities to try to minimise disturbance to residents in the area around the campus.

"Regrettably, some of the mitigation measures were unsuccessful, with strong winds and inclement weather resulting in noise travelling."
