The fire started at around 9pm on Saturday night in Princes End, Dawley Bank, and spread to the neighbouring property.

Firefighters spent around four hours putting out the fire, and investigation officers were at the house yesterday morning to look into the cause.

Police attended yesterday afternoon.

The cause of the fire is not suspicious, the fires service said.

Watch Manager Darren Smith, from Telford Central Fire Station, said: "There is quite substantial damage to the house and the adjoining house.

"The ceiling has come down in the lounge, and the roof is severely damaged. I'd say about half or three quarters of the roof is damaged.

"There is also some damage to the adjoining roof, which has had some tiles burnt off."

"There was at least one appliance there until about 1am on Sunday morning."

A neighbour, Ivan Lewis, said he went to check on his friend at around 11.30pm and the fire was still burning.

Mr Lewis said: "I couldn't see the actual fire because there are trees blocking my view but I saw all the fire engines coming down the road.

"The fire engines probably didn't leave here until around 1am."
