Letter: Views of one individual do not represent Christians in region
Since coming to Telford a year ago, I have wanted learn more about Telford's churches and their congregations.
I have attended Telford churches of several different denominations, from Methodist to Christian Fellowship, to find out more.
I have been struck by the sense of community and of service to those in need. I see first hand the vital role the Church plays in bringing people together.
And I am welcomed at every Church I attend.
In Telford we have a charity called: The Telford Christian Council. The Chief Executive is Andy Smith, who is described on the website as 'the spokesperson for Telford Churches.'
Andy Smith runs the official Telford Christian Council Twitter account. This account tweets anti Government propaganda and anti-Israeli sentiment.
This site has blamed the Prime Minister David Cameron for not caring for flood victims and for attacking the disabled.
The site, which claims to represent our churches, vilifies the Government, describing its policies as evil and brutal.
The site claims Israel is a 'war criminal' and that Israel operates an 'apartheid system' of brutal Zionist occupation.
All the while, Andy Smith our ecumenical dean, wraps up this divisive message with lashings of blessings to the less fortunate and the desire that he, Andy, should be 'a channel of God's peace.'
I am proud to live in a country which allows people to express their opinions, and I do not want to discredit the good works done by the Telford Christian Council, in any way.
However, I feel it is important to point out that the views of Andy Smith are not the views of the Church in Telford and should not be passed off as such.
I am calling on churches in Telford to ask Andy Smith to stop using the banner of 'Telford Christian Council' to promote his unchristian message of division and to put an end to this unpleasant site, which falsely masquerades as the voice of the Church in Telford.
