Letter: Driving on the phone is motoring madness
I am not certain how long it is since the law was introduced by the Government to ban the use of mobile phones in motor vehicles.
The problem is getting far worse and unfortunately due to budget cuts within the police force, Britain now does not have the manpower to enforce the law.
I really fail to understand why so many people believe they have the right to use their mobiles while at the wheel. It is sheer ignorance by those who do!
What possible motive can the guilty drivers have? Is it the fact that when they hear a bleep on their mobile something so important has occurred in their complicated lives that they feel the need to either check the message or alternatively make a phone call?
Obviously they don't show any concerns for anybody else around them.
Let me pose this question: I often witness mothers with children in the car using hand held mobiles. Do these women not care about the safety of their children or are they just plain ignorant?
I am an avid cyclist who covers thousands of miles a year and I would never dream of using my mobile. It is there for a reason; mainly to let my wife know should I either suffer a breakdown or have the misfortune to be involved in a road traffic accident.
I remember the days when I was at school in the late 70s when no one had ever heard of a mobile phone. Heaven only knows how the vast majority of people in the modern era would cope without them.
My answer would be this: anyone caught using a hand held mobile at the wheel gets a minimum six months ban, £500 fine and an education awareness course before getting their licence back plus six points on their licence. Education to the uneducated might help.
