Letter: Pedestrians fear injury due to narrow pavements near pub
The stretch of road on New Street, Shrewsbury, starting from Majestic Wines up to the Boat House pub is very dangerous for pedestrians.
The pavement is very narrow and often cars come around that corner way too fast.
People are in danger of being hit by wing mirrors or cars mounting the pavement. It is a 30mph limit but that is too fast.
I have talked to Anne Chebsey, local councillor and Mike Davies, senior traffic technician for Central Shropshire Council. The council decides how the budget is spent on traffic works based on police traffic report data they get monthly. Mike says: "We do monitor the personal injury collisions as part of any service request and look at areas where there have been three or more personal injury collisions within 100 metres in a three-year period".
I have a petition going in the Roundabout Newsagent and Frankwell Tots Playgroup. The feeling is very strong with locals that something needs to be done.
Anne Chebsey has urged if wing mirrors of vehicles clip your arms, or vehicles mount the pavement etc on that stretch of road, people should report it to the police. It will be recorded as an incident. Without hard evidence the council will not allocate money to a project like this. Speed bumps or a one-way system would be very good. At the very least I have been asking for a 20mph limit and a "Kill your Speed" sign.
If you are a resident please sign the petition in the Roundabout Newsagent. I will send the council this as evidence there is strong feeling about this issue.
Let's make New Street safer!
